PV Case Studies | Homeowner

Worcestershire - 5.52 kWp (Sep '25)

Written by Spirit Energy | 01 Oct 2025

In September 2025, Spirit Energy completed the installation of a solar PV and battery storage system in Worcestershire. By combining high-efficiency AIKO panels with cutting-edge Sigenergy battery technology, the project is set to deliver substantial bill savings, a strong financial return, and meaningful carbon reductions for years to come

Why the Household Chose Solar

Like many households in the county, rising electricity costs and annual consumption of around 8,000 kWh highlighted the need for a reliable way to reduce bills and improve energy security. A solar PV system paired with battery storage provides genuine protection against price volatility while offering the flexibility to store and use energy when it is most valuable.

This type of setup also delivers greater energy independence, reducing reliance on the grid, particularly during peak tariff periods. Environmental responsibility is another important factor: each kilowatt of solar energy generated reduces carbon emissions while contributing to the wider net‑zero effort.

The Solar and Battery System Design

Spirit Energy designed and installed a system tailored to the property:

  • Solar PV: 12 × AIKO 460W all-black modules (5.52 kWp capacity).
  • Inverter: 1 × Sigenergy Energy Controller, 6 kW.
  • Battery Storage: 2 × Sigenergy 8 kWh units, giving 15.6 kWh usable capacity.
  • Mounting: K2 tile roof system (concrete).
  • Extras: Pigeon protection mesh included as standard.

The system was carefully modelled to account for roof orientation and seasonal variation. It is forecast to generate around 4,500 kWh annually, with on-site usage maximised through battery storage and tariff optimisation.

Installation Highlights

Spirit Energy’s in-house team carried out a full technical and structural survey before installation, ensuring the roof could safely bear the load and withstand wind uplift. This level of preparation is a standard in Spirit’s approach. No assumptions, only verified design.

Scaffolding was erected along the full roof span, allowing the team to complete the installation efficiently and safely. Cabling routes were agreed during survey to minimise visual impact, and all works were signed off under MCS and Building Regulations.

The installation process ran smoothly from start to finish, with all components tested and certified before handover. Following commissioning, the system was fully integrated with the chosen energy tariff, enabling optimised charging and export. This seamless connection ensures the household can take immediate advantage of lower off-peak rates and benefit from higher returns during peak export periods.

Financial Benefits

The financial modelling demonstrates strong returns under various electricity price inflation scenarios. Assuming the historic ~7% rate, the figures are:

  • First-year savings: ~£1,300.
  • Payback period: ~9 years.
  • 25-year savings: ~£55,500.
  • Investment yield (IRR): ~11%.
  • Net Present Value (NPV): ~£36,700.

By charging the battery from both solar and off-peak tariffs, the household achieves ~52% grid independence. Over the first 15 years, the average unit cost of electricity is expected to be ~31 p/kWh with the system, compared to ~43 p/kWh without it.

Environmental Impact

Every year, the system will offset ~900 kg of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to:

  • Planting ~430 trees over the system lifetime.
  • Driving ~3,800 fewer miles in a typical petrol car each year.
  • Avoiding the emissions of ~180 London–New York flights over 25 years.

By producing and consuming clean energy on site, the Worcestershire installation plays its part in reducing national demand on fossil fuels.

Conclusion

For the household, investing in solar with battery storage has delivered more than financial peace of mind, it has provided control, resilience, and a tangible environmental contribution. With payback in under a decade and decades of savings ahead, the system is a long-term asset.

Spirit Energy’s technical expertise and thorough process, from surveys to commissioning, ensured a smooth installation and an optimised design. The project stands as an excellent example of how a well-designed domestic solar and battery system can combine cost savings with sustainability.
