Ofgem granted Tesla Energy Ventures an electricity supply licence on 11 March 2026, making Tesla the only home battery manufacturer in Great Britain that can also sell a household its electricity (Octopus is releasing a home battery soon too!). The hardware has moved with it, and a three-phase Powerwall went on sale in Germany on 23 April. A Powerwall is the way into all of it.
Tesla Energy has not launched in the UK yet. Ofgem granted Tesla Energy Ventures Limited an electricity supply licence effective 11 March 2026, covering England, Wales and Scotland. The licence is permission to trade, not a product. No tariff rates, no sign-up and no launch date had been published as of September 2026.
Getting from a licence to a live tariff takes more than a signature. A supplier needs industry code accession, billing systems, customer service and published rates, and none of that was public by the middle of 2026. Industry reporting in March and April expects a phased rollout in late 2026, with Powerwall owners first in line.
A Powerwall earns money today, with no need to wait for Tesla Electric. Spirit Energy sees Powerwall owners on Intelligent Octopus Flux clear around £70 of benefit in a single winter month, purely from importing overnight at the cheap rate and exporting at the evening peak, before counting any solar generation at all.
Four parts of the Tesla roadmap tend to get discussed as though they were the same thing. They sit at very different stages.

Waiting for a launch date nobody has announced has a running cost. A battery installed this autumn starts paying on its first evening, charging overnight at the cheap rate and covering the peak the next day. The savings between now and whenever Tesla Electric opens are gone for good if the unit is not on the wall. Tesla's behaviour in Texas points to Powerwall owners going first when a tariff does arrive, which makes owning the hardware the thing that puts a household near the front of the queue.
A virtual power plant links thousands of home batteries so the grid can call on them together instead of firing up a gas plant, and the owners are paid for the energy their battery gives up. Tesla paid Powerwall owners $9.9 million through its VPP programmes in 2024.
The mechanic that reassures most people is the backup reserve. Tesla's VPP terms state that a Powerwall will never discharge below the reserve its owner has set, so the charge held back for a power cut stays held back during a grid event. The battery gives up the surplus above that line and nothing else.
Tesla's published Texas rates show the shape of the money rather than its UK size. A Tesla Electric member there earns $10 a month per Powerwall for taking part, on top of the credits for energy actually sent back. On 22 June 2023, during a heat dome that pushed wholesale prices to $5 per kWh, Tesla reports Powerwall owners averaged $62 in credits in a single day.
No Tesla-run virtual power plant exists in Great Britain. Owners earning here do it through Octopus, on a smart tariff rather than a Tesla programme, and that stays the route until Tesla Electric opens.
Vehicle to grid does not work with a Tesla in the UK. No current Tesla model supports vehicle to home or vehicle to grid through a third-party bidirectional charger, and Tesla is absent from the UK compatibility lists that carry the Nissan Leaf, the Renault 5 and several Hyundai and Kia models.
What Tesla has confirmed is hardware capability. The Model Y Performance was announced in October 2025 as supporting bidirectional charging by over-the-air update, with Powerwall 3 pairing to follow the same way. Capability and a working installation are separate things.
Three approvals have to line up before any car exports in Britain. The vehicle, the charger and the installation each need G99 certification to the same standard, which is why the compatible list stays short and the hardware stays expensive.
Weighing a Powerwall against waiting for the car to do the same job has a short answer this year. The Powerwall works this winter. Tesla has made no UK announcement on bidirectional charging, and a charger sold as bidirectional ready will not make a Tesla export to anything.
The Powerwall 3P is a three-phase unit that does in one box what previously took three separate Powerwalls to attempt. It stores 13.4 kWh, delivers up to 15.4 kW of AC output and peaks at 21 kW for one second. Tesla put it on sale in Germany on 23 April 2026.
The old problem was backup. A standard Powerwall wires into one of the three phases, which is fine for charging and for shifting load, but in a power cut only that phase stays alive. Three units bought three phases of charging and still only one phase of backup from each. One 3P covers all three.
The fourth MPPT tracker earns its place on a roof with more than one orientation. Each tracker runs its own string independently, so a shaded east-facing run no longer drags down the clean south-facing one sharing the same battery. The 15.4 kW output comes with a condition: Tesla quotes it at 25°C with enough solar generation coming in, and 11.5 kW without.
UK availability is the open question. Tesla has announced no UK release date, no UK price and no G98 or G99 certification for the 3P, and most British homes are single phase anyway, so the standard Powerwall 3 remains the right unit for the large majority of properties.
A home battery is a ten year commitment, so the company standing behind it matters as much as the specification does. Spirit Energy handles the aftercare on every system it installs, and on Powerwall the pattern has been consistent. Tesla logs in remotely, confirms the fault and swaps the whole unit.
Tesla ships the replacement unit to the Spirit Energy warehouse and funds the labour to fit it. The owner pays nothing. No argument about which party is responsible, no claim to fight, no months of chasing. Home battery manufacturers do fail, and when one does the warranty goes with it and the app controlling the system stops being maintained, which is the risk a company of Tesla's size protects against.
Five things are worth establishing before committing to any battery, Tesla or otherwise.
The number that decides a battery is not Tesla's roadmap, it is household self-consumption. A home occupied during the day and a home empty until six get very different returns from the same unit on the same tariff, and that gap is wider than the gap between any two brands on the market. Spirit Energy commissioned the first Tesla Powerwall 3 in the UK, so the modelling starts from systems that are already running. Ask for a figure built on your own half-hourly meter data and your current tariff, and you will know what a Powerwall earns before Tesla publishes a single rate.
Tesla could be one of the cheapest and most competitive tariffs in the UK. It's in their interest, and if you have a Tesla asset, you'll be able to leverage that.
Tesla has not confirmed the UK position. In Texas, Tesla Electric needs no extra hardware beyond a Powerwall already installed and connected, so an existing Powerwall 3 is the likely starting point here too.
Switch to whatever pays best today. Check the exit fee on any fixed term before signing, but sitting with Octopus now would not block a move across to Tesla Electric later on.
