Philip Dennis Foodservice - 1636 Panels

Spirit Energy · 21 Dec 2024

Our recent project for Philip Dennis Foodservice is a standout example of how choosing solar can yield impressive financial returns while also making a positive impact on the environment. It’s our largest commercial solar installation to date, and the results truly speak for themselves.

A Solar Setup Tailored to Philip Dennis

For Philip Dennis Foodservice, sustainability and cost-effectiveness aren’t just buzzwords; they’re guiding principles. With energy costs among their top operational expenses, expanding their existing solar setup was a logical next step.

The company runs two key facilities—a distribution warehouse and a cold store—with the latter drawing the majority of their energy. To make the most of solar power, we installed a 695 kWp system divided between the warehouse (367 kWp) and the cold store (328 kWp). Equipped with 1,636 high-performance 425W panels, this installation is projected to generate around 720,000 kWh each year, majorly cutting their dependence on grid electricity.

A Design Built for Efficiency and Future Growth

We didn’t just install a system; we crafted one designed for long-term success. Six 100 kW inverters operate this 695 kWp setup. By intentionally oversizing the inverters by about 20%, we ensure top performance even in colder, less sunny months. This strategic decision provides a built-in “buffer,” enabling the system to produce more power when it’s needed most. It also future-proofs the installation, if Philip Dennis decides to add electric vehicle charging stations or other electrical demands down the line, the system is ready to handle it.

The Bottom Line: Financial Wins

Philip Dennis is already seeing tangible financial gains. With the system projected to pay for itself in just five years and an internal rate of return (IRR) topping 23%, it’s a smart investment by any measure. Over 20 years, they’ll likely save more than £2.4 million on electricity, with a net present value (NPV) of £1.8 million. Roughly 85% of these savings come from using their own solar-generated power instead of drawing from the grid. The remaining 15% comes from selling surplus energy back to the grid. Beyond immediate cost cuts, the system positions Philip Dennis to handle future energy demands with ease.

Environmental Benefits: Hitting ESG Targets

The environmental impact is equally impressive. As the UK marches toward net-zero emissions, Philip Dennis is setting a strong example. Their new solar system will offset over 2,877 tonnes of CO2 across the next 20 years, comparable to planting 16,440 trees or cancelling out the emissions from 4,294 London-to-New York flights. In choosing solar, Philip Dennis is staying ahead of future regulations as well as their own sustainability targets.

Financing Flexibility: Solar Without the Upfront Cost

Investing in solar doesn’t have damage cashflow. In fact, Philip Dennis took advantage of fully financed options, meaning they enjoyed immediate savings without a hefty initial cost. For businesses that don’t own their buildings or want to avoid an upfront investment, we offer Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Under a PPA, a third-party investor owns and maintains the system while you purchase the solar power at a significantly lower rate than standard grid electricity. Once the contract wraps up, businesses can buy the system at a reduced cost, securing even greater long-term savings.

What Philip Dennis Foodservice Had to Say

Peter Dennis, Managing Director of Philip Dennis Foodservice, reflects on their investment:

“Having previously installed solar panels, we already knew the technology’s potential. Given our high electricity usage, adding more panels was simply the right move. Beyond the financial logic, solar aligns with our drive toward improved sustainability. This investment has nudged us closer to our Net Zero targets and significantly cut our carbon footprint. Plus, by lowering our reliance on the grid, we’ve shielded ourselves from the kind of energy price spikes that have challenged many businesses in recent years.

Working with Spirit Energy was an easy choice. They were proactive, offered solid technical advice (no pushy sales tactics), and tailored a system to meet our needs. Even as we replaced our roof, Spirit Energy collaborated seamlessly with our roofing contractor. The project wrapped up on time, on budget, and with minimal disruption. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to any business considering solar.”

A Bright Future for Businesses and Solar

Philip Dennis Foodservice’s project shows just how powerful solar energy can be for a business’s bottom line and environmental footprint. As energy costs climb and ESG goals become more pressing, solar presents a long-term, strategic solution. It not only boosts savings and lowers emissions but also sets the stage for future expansions, like EV charging, without extra hassle.
